THE INVOCATION
P.     In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C. Amen.

APPROACHING THE WORD
P. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

C. The word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.

P. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

C. The Lord sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction.

P. “The word that goes forth from my mouth shall not return to me empty,” says the Lord.

C. “It shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

OPENING PRAYER
P. Lord Jesus, you are true God and also true man, the Son of Mary. For our sake you took on human flesh. Your were born among us as one of us so that you might take our sins onto yourself and die in our place. As we follow you to the cross this Lenten season, lead us to walk in your footsteps, to live in love and service toward others.

C. Amen.

TONIGHT’S STUDY: DISHONORING AUTHORITY

I.  Read Exodus 20:12

What is this commandment instructing us to do?

B. What insights does Luther shed on this commandment in his meaning?
We should fear and love God that we may not despise our parents and masters, nor provoke them to anger, but give them honor, serve and obey them, and hold them in love and esteem.

II.     What further insights are found in Exodus 21:15-17 and Proverbs 1:8-9?

III.   Read Luke 2:41-52
A.    How is Jesus honoring his Father in heaven?

B.     How is Jesus honoring his earthly parents?

IV.   Read Romans 13:1-2

A. What is this passage telling us?

B.  How is this related to the fourth commandment?

V.    Read John 19:12-16

What accusation is made against Jesus here?

B.     Is this a charge against the fourth commandment?

C.   Why is this so serious?

VI.  Things To Ponder

How are we to honor those in authority over us?

B.     When might we justifiably disobey?

CLOSING PRAYER
Heavenly Father, we pray this night that you would help us to honor our parents and all those you haveplaced in authority over us. Help us to temper our pride and self interests, knowing that by honoring those who are in authority over us we honor you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

THE BENEDICTION
P. May the Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord lead you as you take up your cross to follow him. The Lord grant you salvation and guide your feet in the way of peace.

C. Amen.
