OPENING HYMN: 420 “Christ The Life Of All The Living” (1,2)

THE INVOCATION
P.     In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C. Amen.

APPROACHING THE WORD
P. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

C. The word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.

P. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

C. The Lord sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction.

P. “The word that goes forth from my mouth shall not return to me empty,” says the Lord.

C. “It shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

OPENING PRAYER
P. Heavenly Father, during this Lenten season we will follow our Lord’s path to the cross. Lead us to repent of our sins. Forgive us for Jesus’ sake and, with the help of your Spirit, lead us to walk in the path of your holy commandments. Bless our study of your Word so that we might better know your love and your will for us. Hear our prayer in Jesus’ name.

C. Amen.

THE PSALM FOR THE DAY:  From Psalm 16
P. Protect me, O God; I trust in you for safety.

C. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; all the good things I have come from you.”

P. I praise the Lord, because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me.

C. I am always aware of the Lord’s presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me.

P. And so I am thankful and glad, and I feel completely secure,

C. because you protect me from the power of death.

P. I have served you faithfully,

C. and you will not abandon me to the world of the dead.

P. You will show me the path that leads to life.

C. Your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever.

HYMN: 420 “Christ The Life Of All The Living” (6,7)

A RESPONSIVE READING
P. Surely he has born our griefs

C. And carried our sorrows:

P. Yet, we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

C. But, he was pierced for our transgressions;

P. He was crushed for our iniquities;

C. Upon him was the punishment that brought us peace,

P. And with his wounds we are healed.

C. We all, like sheep, have gone astray;

P. We have turned, everyone, to his own way;

C. And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, you were despised and rejected, a man of sorrows acquainted with grief. Yet, you willingly suffered it all for the sake of our salvation. By the power of your Spirit, we have been called to confess you as Lord and Savior. You are the promised Messiah. Help us to be faithful in our confession of the truth so that we might receive the crown of life when our course is through. In your precious name we pray. Amen.

THE BENEDICTION
P. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord lead you as you take up your cross to follow him. The Lord grant you salvation and guide your feet in the way of peace.

C. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN:  439 “O Dearest Jesus” (4-6)
