OPENING HYMN:  436 “Go To Dark Gethsemane”

THE INVOCATION
P.    In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C. Amen.

THE CALL TO WORSHIP
P. Lord God, ruler of the universe, heaven is your throne and the earth is your footstool.

C. We fall at your feet and worship you.

P. Lord Jesus, Savior of the world, sin and death are in subjection under your feet.

C. We fall at your feet and worship you.

P. Lord Spirit, guide of our lives, you lead our feet in the way of salvation.

C. We fall at your feet and worship you.

P. Lord Jesus, you have forgiven us much because you have loved us much.

C. Teach us also to love and forgive ourselves as well as others.  Amen.

APPROACHING THE WORD
P. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

C. Jesus said, “I thirst.”

P. The word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.

C. Jesus said, “I thirst.”

P. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.

C. Jesus said, “I thirst.”

P. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

C. Jesus said, “I thirst.”

P. “The word that goes forth from my mouth shall not return to me empty,” says the Lord. “It shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

C. Jesus said, “I thirst.”

HYMN:  435 “Come To Calvary’s Holy Mountain” (1-2)

THE PSALM FOR THE DAY:  From Psalm 42
P. As a deer longs for a stream of cool water, so I long for you, O God.

C. I thirst for you, the living God.

P. When can I go and worship in your presence?

C. Day and night I cry, and tears are my only food.

P. My heart breaks when I remember the past, when I went with the crowds to the house of God and led them as they walked along, a happy crowd, singing and shouting praise to God.

C. Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God.

P. May the Lord show his constant love during the day, so that I may have a song at night, a prayer to the God of my life.

C. To God, my defender, I say, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go on suffering from the cruelty of my enemies?”

P. I am crushed by their insults, as they keep on asking me, “Where is your God?”

C. Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God.

THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY
Dear heavenly Father, as we continue to make our way towards the cross, help us to remember that we journey, not alone, but with all the faithful throughout the world; that we might bring attention to your all availing sacrifice on the cross to everyone.  In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON:  Exodus 34:29-35
When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD.  When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.  But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them.  Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai.
When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face.  But whenever he entered the LORD’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded,  they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD.

THE SECOND LESSON:  Colossians 3:12-17
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

HYMN: 435 “Come To Calvary’s Holy Mountain” (3-4)

THE GOSPEL LESSON:  John 19:26-28
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,”  and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

HYMN: 456 “Were You There”

A LENTEN STUDY: “Facing One Another”

THE OFFERING

PRAYERS FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD
P. Like a good shepherd, our Lord leads us beside the still waters and restores our souls. Our cups run over. As those who follow where he leads, let us join in fervent prayer:

C. Satisfy us with your overflowing grace, O God.

P. That the Church of God may be attuned to the needs of the world, especially those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, let us join in fervent prayer:

C. Satisfy us with your overflowing grace, O God.

P. That governments and authorities may administer their responsibilities for the common good, as those who seek to fulfill the obligations of their office, let us join in fervent prayer:

C. Satisfy us with your overflowing grace, O God.

P. That God’s grace may overflow into the lives of the hungry and thirsty, the homeless and helpless, the sick and the dying, the hurting and grieving, and all who want in any way, let us join in fervent prayer:

C. Satisfy us with your overflowing grace, O God.

P. And that when our life on earth is done, the Lord may receive us into the glory of his saints and fulfill the faithful word by which he calls us to himself, let us join in fervent prayer:

C. Satisfy us with your overflowing grace, O God.  Amen.

THE BENEDICTION
P. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord lead you as you take up your cross to follow him. The Lord grant you salvation and guide your feet in the way of peace.

C. Amen.
